Unlimited Power: The New Science of Personal AchievementBy Anthony RobbinsPublished by Pocket Books, 1986 ISBN 0 7434 0939 6 Soft cover, 425 pages
I found this book difficult reading, especially Section 1: The Modelling of Human Excellence.
Robbins practices Neuro-Linguisitic Programming (NLP), and this book discusses this philosophy.
He gives a lot of reference to and examples of what he does in his seminars. I presume this is
to support the theory of how NLP works.
Although I found the material difficult to grasp, there were some valuable examples, in
particular, he gives the following when he talks about modelling: "A nice metaphor for the
components and use if strategies is that of baking. If someone makes the greatest chocolate
cake in the world, can you produce the same quality results? Of course you can, if you have
that person's recipe. A recipe is nothing but a strategy, a specific plan of what resources to
use and how to use them to produce a specific result."
I found Section II: The Ultimate Success Formula, to have more 'real world' advice and material
that can be used. Robbins gives the following advice to overcome negativity: "The second idea
is that our behaviour patterns aren't indelibly carved in our brain. If we repeatedly do
something that limits us, we're not suffering from some abtruse mental ailment. We're just
running a terrible pattern over and over again. It may be a way we relate to others or a way
we think. The solution is simply to interrupt the pattern, stop what you're doing, and try
something new. We're not robots wired into barely remembered personal traumas. If we do
something we don't like, all we have to do is recognize it and change it."
This is a book that I believe needs more than one read to grasp the concepts and principles
Anthony Robbins talks about. Nevertheless, it does have valuable information for changing your
life, as is given on the back cover, "Success is habit forming and the habit of success, once
learned, is nearly impossible to forget".
