Goal Setting Tools about choices: discover the value of choice from Jeremy Kitson

By Colin Dunbar

"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved." -- Jeremy Kitson

The dictionary defines chance as, "unpredictable course of events; fortune; luck"

I must be honest and say I'm a firm believer in choice - and in the choices we make. When no one is holding a gun to your head, it is a matter of free choice, and you, and only you, take responsibility for that choice.

We humans are the only beings that have the ability to reason, and to think. Animals do not have this ability, they function on instinct only. Yet, we prefer not to use this awesome power we have. But using our thinking ability, we can avoid so much sadness and misfortune, simply by thinking of our choices.

Our ability to reason gives us the ability of choice, and it is a reality that life does not stand still. We cannot sit on the verandah and watch life go by, and hope that we'll never need to make a choice. Life consists of choices, and when we take just that little more effort, we can usually make the right choice.

When we want to achieve something in our personal circumstances, or in life, we need to move forward. First we prepare, and then we make a choice. Bob Giulianni has a plaque on his desk that says, "I'm responsible"; and that applies to each and every one of us: we are responsible for the choices we make in life.

Make it your goal to...

Before you embark on something, take some time out, give it some thought, and then make your choice. Depending on the complexity, or the size of your decision, your thinking time will vary. Make a choice.
