Greetings my Friend

I trust this newsletter finds you well.

I know I said in the last issue that it would be the last. Well, I'm trying it one more time. I'll see how many of this issue gets through, and then I'll make the decision to continue with the newsletter or not.

Last month I finished reading The Alchemist, and wanted to write a review. After a number of attempts, I couldn't find what to say. I can't even explain what type of book it is, although I heard it was an "inspiring read".

There are no new additions to the eaziGOAL site, as I was helping friends, and researching my further website ventures. September I'll be spending more time on eaziGOAL.

Thanks for reading and may you experience only the best that can be.

Your friend in success.

The Rewards of Patience and Persistence (A true story)

by Colin Dunbar

I sold my small printing business, as I had zero mental stimulation and frustration was the order of the day. Mental stimulation is something I seek in my daily life, and it was this that made go for an interview for a staff position with an international telecoms company.

At my interview I was told the position was for developing e-learning applications, as well as improving the functionality of the product support documentation. "Take the company's documentation into the 21st century." I was told. This was new and challenging, and I accepted the position. 3 November 2002 I reported for duty.

I started at the company with a draft documentation strategy proposal in my hand.

The team leader was going to be visiting the South African office, from head office in Birmingham (England) in a month's time, and we would discuss the proposal.

The discussion on the proposal went reasonably well, and I was given the go-ahead to produce a formal strategy document - including all facts and figures. My nights were filled with researching and writing. I was enjoying myself.

My strategy document was submitted, and received positively.

Obstacles #1: The company was going to do a technology transfer from England to South Africa - all new developments (and accordingly, budgets) were put on hold. The transfer to South Africa took the best part of a year.

In June 2003 I started my SBI journey, studying the books, newsletters, and websites. My nights were filled with reading and researching. I was enjoying myself.

As result of the technology transfer, I now reported to the Test Group Manager, and although I received a lot of support, her hands were tied by upper management with regards to any new developments.

A second technical writer was employed, and working within constraints, our time was taken up with the improvement of the Online Help, as well as adding minimal new information.

This was done using the existing tools we had, thus there was still no new developments.

With the technology transfer complete, I again submitted my strategy document. There was still no go-ahead.

Things remained as they were.

Obstacles #2: The holding company made the decision to sell the company I worked for. After a stressful year, a buyer was found. As from 1 April 2005, we officially had new owners.

By this time I understood the product, and the industry a lot better, and realized that it was not practical to advance or develop the support documentation in a new direction. I still needed more stimulation in what I was doing.

In the middle of March 2005, I contacted the Global Marketing Communications Manager, in London, with a proposal that I wanted to re-design and maintain the company website. I wanted to take ownership of the site. I was advised that the existing web design company was already in process with the new website.

I heard nothing in this regard, until...

20 July 2005.

The Test Group Manager told me that the Executive Vice President, Product Management and Marketing was in South Africa, and he had said that he wanted to meet me to discuss the re-design of both our company website, and the holding company's site.

We had a brief meeting, and he said I should contact the Global Marketing Communications Manager, and get the details as to what was required, from her. On 21 July 2005 we spoke telephonically.

She briefly mentioned what the problems with the existing sites were, and asked me what I would need to design and maintain both corporate sites. I told her I had a basic structure of a proposed site (3 pages). She was excited, and asked me to mail it to her asap.

Small changes were made, and she submitted it to the Executive Vice President for approval.

On 19 August, I received a mail from the Global Marketing Communications Manager, letting me know that the decision had been made, and I would now have ownership of the 2 websites.

"persistence and determination are omnipotent."

What's the moral of the story? I'm now in the very fortunate position to be enjoying what I do from 9 to 5, and then I go home, and enjoy some more...
