Sheesh, June was somewhat of a hectic month. My wife went for surgery, and there were after-effects, as result of tension and stress. We are going through a personal trauma at present, but the wheel turns, and "This too shall pass".Anyway, I did get this issue done, and it's actually a bumper issue - 2 feature articles ;o)
I've been reading Napoleon Hill's "16 Laws" again, and I'm amazed at how great this man was. I'd like to create a document comparing what Mr Hill said in 1928, compared to what the modern motivators are saying today. I think it will be interesting.
Thanks for reading and may you experience only the best that can be.
Your friend in success.

The Way of Life
by Colin DunbarThis article is based on a post I made on the SBI! Forums. I've included it here as the message applies to life itself...
Quote:
"The 'How and Why People Succeed' forum is not about SBI!, except within the larger perspective of life itself."...life itself...
That is the essence of this article.
I tend to follow a somewhat simple principle, but I've found it to be really effective in practically all my endeavors... studying, hobbies, writing, business, marriage.
It's what I call the A-P-A-R principle (I know, not very original :o)
Awareness. This is an awareness both of ourself, and the great world out there. What are my natural abilities? Talents? Skills? What do I REALLY enjoy? What do I totally dislike? And yes, it is there - all it takes is a little thought.
With this "analysis" done, we then look at what is available "out there" and ask the questions, "What can I make use of." "What opportunities can I take advantage of?" "What can I use to my benefit?" A matter of joining the dots.
If I don't know myself: my likes and dislikes, I will find it difficult, sometimes impossible to find something I can become enthusiastic about. And without enthusiasm, it becomes extremely difficult to reach high levels of success.
Preparation. With the foundation in place, the work of getting the facts (and figures, where applicable) is started. This is the research stage. Spending time on this stage can avoid costly (money and time) mistakes, and prevent disappointment.
In business, this would be the feasibility study, or the business plan. Even in marriage, this stage is beneficial.
Action. All the thinking and talking about something is absolutely worthless, if there is no action. When all is said and done, we need to take action - to move forward.
It is sad to see how many people, discard really good ideas, by looking at the big picture only. It is often fear (sometimes laziness) that overwhelms people, and they never take action. A solution to this is to break down the objective into doable steps, and then start at step 1, then step 2, and so forth. Following this route practically ALWAYS ends with positive results.
Review. This is an on-goinf process. We should always review where we are on our journey, and is it still the path we want to be on.
Quote:
"...failure can be dissected."Here is an extremely valuable concept that many don't make use of. And yet, many successful people do this as part of their life. Dissect what happened. And this should be done for both the positive and the negative. That is, when something goes wrong, take some time and review what went wrong. The benefit of this can avoid a similar mistake being made. Similarly, when something goes right, review it, then this success formula can be repeated. And we certainly want to repeat the positives, and minimize the negatives.
Golden question: What did I learn from that lesson? Good or bad.
Quote:
"Try. Make mistake. Fail. Learn."THAT is the cycle of life, from infant to old age, in practically all areas of life. I dislike the word "fail" - it has such a negative connotation to it. I always use the concept that we learn lessons. Some lessons don't go so well, others go excellent. As mentioned previously, the important principle here is that we take stock of what was done, or what occurred.
There is absolutely no disgrace in making a "mistake". But there is no excuse for repeating the same mistakes - this just means that we have not taken the time to learn from what we did (or didn't do). Be ready to learn.
Quote:
"There is no such thing as an errorless business that never suffers a setback."Amen to that. Where in life does everything go smoothly, ALL THE TIME. This is reality. This is life.
And yes, "double-check your planning and work" - so much disappointment can be avoided following this piece of advice. Instead of complaining, or becoming miserable, learn from the lesson, and then move on.
This Chinese Proverb is worth remembering: "That the birds of worry and care fly above your head, this you cannot change. But that they build nests in your hair, this you can prevent."
Further on the concept of preparation:
I use the illustration of the fuel gauge and the flat tire.
If we get a flat tire, there is not much we can do about it. We get the spare out and change the wheel.
If we we run out of fuel because we weren't watching our fuel gauge, it is as result of our not paying attention, that is, our awareness is clouded.
Quote:
"Persistence is nothing more than staying in motion."Not quite. But what is said a little later, "keep moving forward" is essential. As Abraham Lincoln said, "I am a slow walker, but I never walk backwards." Just remaining in motion can be compared to running on a treadmill... a lot of energy will be used, but we will not advance to a finish line.
Quote:
"The point here is that biz planning and execution is no different on the Net than in the "real" world."It is absolutely amazing how many people seem to disregard this truism. Goodness, even if we want to run a home hobby business, we need to plan it.
It is so sad that we live in such a rushed society, that we don't find the time plan properly. And this is such a valuable part of success. I've had the misfortune of seeing so many people not succeed purely as result of the lack of just a little planning. One step at a time...
Can I close with the words of the founder of IBM, Thomas J Watson: "Would you like me to give you a formula for... success? It's quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You're thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn't at all... you can be discouraged by failure - or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because, remember that's where you'll find success."

The Sad Death Of Common Sense
I received this in a recent email and I have no idea who wrote it. What do you think?"Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend by the name of Common Sense who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such value lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in charge). His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.
Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student; however they could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Finally, Common sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.
He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
If you still know him pass this on, if not join the majority and do nothing."
