Book reviews: "I Have Life"

By Alison
Published by Penguin Books, 1998
ISBN 0 140 28079 0
Soft cover, 275 pages

I Have Life is an awesome story. A story of strength and survival.

"But Alison defied death. And more than that, she denied her attackers the satisfaction of destroying her life. I HAVE LIFE is the triumphant story of a woman who refused to become a victim. The courage which allowed her t move beyond severe physical and emotional trauma and to turn a devastating experience into something life-affirming and strong, is an insapiration to people everywhere."

This is one of the rare books that I started reading, and didn't put it down until I had finished it.

This is the story of a woman who was raped, stabbed, had her throat cut and left for dead in a flithy clearing miles from the city.

And it is the story of this woman's mental strength and motivation to fight back. It is inspiring.

Alison offers the following, "The one thing I do have control over, and it is this that has helped me and is still helping me to deal with this trauma, is choice. I have the freedom to choose how I will respond to it, I have the choice to make of it what I must and to learn from it."

After having read this book, I was totally convinced of the importance of having a goal, and the value of being focused. In Alison's words, "Those people who we think are lucky actually work very hard at creating that good fortune. And it does not come easily. There will be many failures along the way, but we can choose to allow them to defeat us or we can, as I said earlier , look at the lessons learned and try again."

This book is a rare inspiration. I have no doubt at all to recommend I Have Life. Be ready for an inspiring read.

Alison's advice is an absolute jewel, "Believe in yourself, convince yourself beforehand that you are confident, that you can do it. Believe in the results you want and you will find yourself convinced before you convince anyone else. Try it. It really works."
